Since 2007, the Andaman Center for Migrant Education provides education to underprivileged migrants in Southern Thailand. Giving them a chance to break the circle of poverty and opportunities for a better future. Otherwise, those children often have to work in high-risk jobs that can lead them to human trafficking, exploitation and poverty.
What do they do?
The school provides Burma’s children full-day schooling with lessons from full-time teachers and volunteers in math, english and thai for instance, they also benefit from health checks.
One of the important tasks of the center is also to persuade migrant families that their children would benefit from going to school. Indeed when children do not attend school they tend to work with their parents or watch their siblings while their parents go to work and end up working in dangerous conditions. The creation of a transparent relationship is vital so that families can trust the center and send their children to school for the day.
