Ah Let Chaung Clinic: Bringing Healthcare Across the River
On the far side of the Yangon River lies Ah Let Chaung, a village that has long needed reliable healthcare. Founded in 2008 following Nagis cyclone, the Ah Let Chaung Clinic has served thousands of patients for over 15 years. After closing during the COVID-19 pandemic, the clinic reopened its doors in May 2024, aiming to serve those often overlooked and treating various illnesses, including fevers, diabetes, high blood pressure, and more.
Though isolated, the Ah Let Chaung Clinic bridges gaps in healthcare, serving an underserved community that faces political instability and natural challenges. The dedicated staff—a full-time doctor, two local assistants, and a security guard—provide essential care despite these difficult conditions. Five days a week, the doctor crosses the river by boat, sometimes through heavy rain and unpredictable weather. The EXO Foundation has taken steps to ensure the safety of the staff, providing safety measures, life jackets and life insurance.
At Ah Let Chaung Clinic, a visit costs between 3,000 and 5,000 Myanmar Kyat (about 0.67 to 1 USD). For those facing financial difficulties, this fee is graciously waived. The clinic ensures that medicines are accessible, either by offering them at minimal prices or providing them free of charge. The income generated plays a vital role in supporting the clinic’s operations, covering electricity costs, transportation for the doctors, and replenishing essential medical supplies.
While most of the patients are elderly, the clinic aims to reach more people, including children and working adults who are often busy during the day. To do so, the clinic plans to adjust operating hours and hold health education programs in the nearby villages. The clinic is also making sure that medical supplies are well-stocked and properly managed to serve the community efficiently.
In the coming months, Ah Let Chaung Clinic will expand its outreach, visiting other underserved areas after the rainy season. The clinic’s efforts show how much can be done with determination, even when faced with difficult circumstances.
With the support of the community and The EXO foundation, Ah Let Chaung Clinic will continue to make a difference, bringing healthcare to those who need it most.
