Share the Wonder in Myanmar: Empowering Young Girls in Yangon through Education and Sustainability
In a world where education and environmental sustainability are increasingly important, the EXO Foundation, in collaboration with NGO Partner Girl Determined and Social Enterprise Partner Kokkoya Organics, embarked on an inspiring journey on the 15th and 16th of September 2023. The focus of these trips was to empower 61 adolescent girls aged 12-18 from Girl Determined with knowledge and inspiration. The girls were treated to an enriching day at Kokkoya Organics, an urban farm in Yangon, Myanmar, where they explored the farm, learned about sustainable practices, and gained valuable insights into waste management. Here is a glimpse into their transformative experience.
Morning – A Hands-on Organic Farm Experience: The day began with the girls stepping onto Kokkoya Organics, an urban farm that specializes in training young farmers in sustainable and organic agricultural practices. This hands-on experience was a unique opportunity for the girls to connect with nature and explore the world of agriculture. They got their hands dirty, engaging in various farm activities, from planting seeds to tending to crops. This immersive experience allowed them to understand the importance of sustainable agriculture and the role it plays in conserving the environment.
Lunch and Waste Management Presentation: After an eventful morning on the farm, the girls gathered for a well-deserved lunch. But it wasn’t just a meal; it was a moment to reflect on the importance of waste management. The day’s activities culminated in a presentation and sharing session on the three R’s: Refuse, Reuse, and Recycle. The girls learned how these principles can significantly reduce plastic waste and contribute to a cleaner, healthier environment. Kokkoya Organics’ commitment to waste management served as a powerful example, leaving the girls inspired to make a difference.
Afternoon – Empowering Conversations: Following their delicious meal, the girls had the opportunity to engage in meaningful conversations with the dedicated staff of Kokkoya Organics. They learned about the farm’s processes and its tireless efforts to reduce plastic usage, making a positive impact on the environment. The girls asked thoughtful questions and gained insights into sustainable practices that can be applied not only in agriculture but also in their daily lives. Kokkoya’s staff, including women leading the business, served as inspiring role models, showing the girls that they too can make a difference in their communities.
