Shunyoso is a historic country retreat on Awaji Island in the South of Japan. They are a not-for-profit membership organization which aims to “protect the cultural heritage building utilizing responsible tourism as a tool”. Indeed, in 2004, the guest-house was registered as a tangible cultural property. Today, the cultural asset of this house is highlighted with the conservation of traditional techniques and art where visitors can enjoy traditional puppet shows and tea ceremonies with local communities in a typical Japanese building.
What do they do?
The house welcomes visitors to stay in this historical residence, it is also possible to organize events and privatize the site.
Over the past few years, Shunyoso has contributed to promoting Japanese culture while reducing its negative environmental impact. They have implemented modern technologies with lower carbon footprint without compromising the guest’s comfort.
Shunyoso also supports local production to minimize importing food and drinks from distant places and help local businesses.
At Shunyoso, they believe that responsible tourism can contribute to the preservation of cultural heritage by means of education and interpretation.
EXO Foundation support
Shunyoso won a sustainability award in the people category for protecting cultural heritage. The prize rewards the effort of those working in this historical building, especially the local community who performs traditional shows and makes this place a vibrant cultural heritage center.
The money of the award will go into the conservation of the building, to make it more sustainable and to organize “community-based” events.
Shunyoso is one of the responsible community-led tourism activities recommended to our travel partners. We highly recommend its visits.
