The Reef-World Foundation is a UK registered charity created in 1999. At the beginning, they aimed to bring basic marine ecology to fishing villages and local communities in Thailand. Nowadays, they are operating internationally to support governments and communities in sustainable consumption and production of coastal resources and marine life.
What do they do?
Their mission is to inspire and empower people to act in conserving and sustainably developing coastal resources, particularly coral reefs and related ecosystems through education. By that, they provide strategic capacity-building assistance, based on sound science, to local environmental champions who are well-positioned to spread this knowledge within their community or industry for conservation action.
The Reef-World’s main project is Green Fins, implemented in partnership with UN Environment Programme, which focuses on driving environmentally friendly SCUBA diving and snorkelling practices across the industry globally. Scuba diving and snorkeling attract millions of people from all over the world and the industry itself employs a vast number of people, both foreign and from local communities. Working with the marine tourism industry allows them to protect local ecosystems and build a sustainable tourism industry by spreading a broader message to a large community.
EXO Foundation support
We work with The Reef World Foundation to increase the conservation reach of the Green Fins initiative and to support Reef-World towards achieving its charitable objectives as follows:
– to promote the wise use of natural resources, particularly coral reefs and related tropical resources for the benefit of local communities, visitors and future generations
– to promote the advancement of education about natural resources, coral reefs, related ecosystems and their conservation. In the frame of this partnership, EXO Travel will be labelling the tours of Green Fins partners on its website and encouraging its suppliers to adopt the Green Fins code of conduct and certification to promote responsible diving and snorkeling practices in Asia!
