Jahoo is a community-owned ecotourism enterprise which provides exclusive tours in the rainforest to encounter wild primates, including endangered species. Tours are given by indigenous Bunong people who are traditionally living in the forest and depend on its sustainable use. The Keo Seima Wildlife Sanctuary where the primates can be observed also allows researchers to understand the gibbons better.
Jahoo can count on the support of many partners such as the Indigenous Community Committee (ICC), the Ministry of Environment of Cambodia, World Hope International and the Wildlife Conservation Society.
What do they do?
Protect endangered species
The sanctuary protects species that are endangered by hunting and trafficking. Thanks to data collected by the ‘conservation monitoring’ they have been able to see that the gibbon population remains stable in this rainforest. The area welcomes scientifics who are studying gibbons to better understand this species, so genetically close to humans but still little known. Moreover, a huge part of tourist fees are spent for the conservation of gibbons.
Help the indigenous community
Jahoo offers employment opportunities to the Bunong community such as guiding, hospitality and wildlife research as they have a great knowledge of the forest. Over 90% of tour fees is given to the local community and support education, cultural events, land protection of indigenous people and wildlife conservation patrols.
