Supporting Cinema & Local Storytelling in Luang Prabang
At EXO Foundation, we believe that sustainable tourism is about more than just protecting natural landscapes—it’s about nurturing the vibrant cultural fabric of the destinations we call home. That is why we are thrilled to announce our continued support for the Blue Chair Film Festival taking place this December 4–8, 2026, in the UNESCO World Heritage town of Luang Prabang, Laos.
Bringing Cinema to a Town Without a Theater
Since its inception in 2009 (formerly known as the Luang Prabang Film Festival), Blue Chair has operated as a non-profit cultural organization dedicated to celebrating contemporary Southeast Asian cinema.
What makes this initiative so special is its radical commitment to accessibility. Luang Prabang does not have a commercial movie theater, making the festival a vital cultural bridge. Every single screening across the 5-day event is completely free and open to the public, bringing together local residents, domestic visitors, and international travelers to celebrate regional storytelling under the stars.
Empowering Local Filmmakers
Beyond the festival’s vibrant public screenings, Blue Chair plays a critical role in fostering the domestic film industry through the Lao Filmmakers Fund. Since 2013, the fund has provided direct grants to help Lao creators bring their visions to life, supporting 39 short films and 12 feature films to date.
By giving local artists the resources and platforms to share their own voices, the initiative ensures that storytelling in the region remains self-determined, sustainable, and thriving.
How EXO Foundation is Helping
To help bring the 2026 edition to life, EXO Foundation is stepping up to support the festival team on the ground:
- Financial Assistance: Providing a direct grant toward festival operations and filmmaker support.
- Logistical Support: Supplying two dedicated minivans to keep event organizers, equipment, and visiting filmmakers moving safely across venues in Luang Prabang.
By investing in events like Blue Chair, we ensure that tourism in Laos directly supports local heritage, artistic expression, and inclusive community experiences.
