Mahouts Elephant Foundation is a registered charity situated in Northern Thailand near the border between Thailand and Myanmar. They rescue elephants from abusive tourism industry and introduce them to a 90,000 acres protected forest, assisting villagers in reclaiming elephants that were sold to the tourism industry due to lack of income.
How do they work?
Based on a cooperation with Karen communities, the organization offers a sanctuary for rescued elephants and keeps track of them with mahouts checking on them once a week or daily if they feel the need.
The community welcome tourists in their villages to observe the elephants alongside skilled and knowledgeable mahouts in a safari style observation. They learn about authentic village life and take part in traditional cultural activities, such as fabric and basket weaving.
The community based tourism benefits both people and the elephants.
This also allows them to study Asian elephants living in large forests and collect precious data that they share during conferences.
How can you help?
Your donation directly benefits their needs: you can sponsor an elephant.
Mahouts Elephant Foundation supports 4 elephants to stay safely living in their forest home. Your sponsorship will enable them to meet the daily needs of the elephants, including the salaries of their mahouts, and ensure that they can remain in the forest. They rely entirely on your support to achieve this.
Otherwise you can participate in a mountain adventure with the Mahouts Elephant Foundation to enjoy a stay in a traditional village and observe the elephants.
EXO Foundation support
The donation from EXO Foundation will allow the Mahouts Elephant Foundation to support two elephants at their last project. Six elephants were at risk of being sold into the tourism industry and are now safe thanks to this community based tourism project.
The support of EXO Foundation will thus protect two of the six elephants for one year.
