Protecting Wildlife & Forests in Koh Kong
Deep in the heart of Koh Kong province, Cambodia, lies the pristine rainforest and waterways of the Tatai Wildlife Sanctuary. Here, our long-time eco-lodge partner, Rainbow Lodge, is taking bold action to safeguard one of Southeast Asia’s most vital biodiversity hotspots.
We are proud to share that the EXO Foundation has made a donation to Rainbow Lodge’s Conservation Fund to help launch and sustain critical wildlife protection initiatives on the ground.
Safeguarding Vulnerable Species Under Threat
Despite the ecological importance of Koh Kong’s wildlife sanctuaries, the region faces ongoing threats from illegal logging, habitat fragmentation, and wildlife poaching.
The urgency of this work was highlighted recently when camera traps set up around Rainbow Lodge captured rare and remarkable footage of two key mammal species:
- The Marbled Cat (Pardofelis marmorata) – An elusive, tree-dwelling wild cat species native to South and Southeast Asia.
- The Greater Hog Badger (Arctonyx collaris) – Recorded multiple times roaming the forest floor.
Because both of these species are high-value targets for illegal poachers, establishing reliable, routine protection of the area is more urgent than ever.
How Our Grant Will Make an Impact
Our grant directly empowers local stewardship by funding community-led conservation measures:
- Local Scout Patrols: Employing local community scouts to conduct regular forest patrols, monitor wildlife movement, and deter illegal activities like snare-setting and logging.
- Government & Community Collaboration: Partnering with the local Community Protected Area (CPA) and Ministry of Environment (MoE) rangers to coordinate joint monitoring in the Tatai Wildlife Sanctuary.
- Coastal & Mangrove Protection: Supporting coastal conservation efforts in the nearby Peam Krasaop Wildlife Sanctuary in collaboration with the Fishing Cat Ecological Enterprise (FCEE).
Responsible Travel in Action
This project reflects the true essence of regenerative tourism—where local eco-lodges act not just as accommodations, but as active guardians of the destinations they call home. By combining private initiative, government cooperation, and local community leadership, Rainbow Lodge is ensuring that Cambodia’s rare wildlife continues to thrive.
