Lighting Up Luang Prabang
Each October, the people of Luang Prabang celebrate Bun Ok Pansa, the End of Buddhist Lent, with candles, lanterns, and handmade bamboo decorations that illuminate the city’s temples and homes. The festival marks the end of the monks’ three-month retreat and commemorates Lord Buddha’s return from heaven after teaching his mother.
Led by Sathu Nhyai Onekeo Sitthivong, Abbot of Vat Pakkhan and Head of the Buddhist Fellowship Organisation of Luang Prabang, this community-led initiative brings together monks, novices, residents, and supporters to prepare materials for temple decorations — from coloured papers to candles. The event fosters creativity, teamwork, and pride among local youth while preserving one of Luang Prabang’s most cherished cultural traditions.
