The Datai is a resort in Langkawi, an archipelago in Malaysia, which puts nature in the center of its preoccupation. The Datai Pledge is an organization whose objectives are to conserve the nature surrounding the resort and to reduce the negative impact of their footprint on the environment.
What do they do?
In order to achieve this goal, the organization is driven by four pillars and different organisations and communities representing each of the pillars.
The first pillar is called “Pure for the future”, it underpins the resort’s commitment to be a sustainable business. It is based on the principles of a circular economy to reduce waste and thus the pollution on the island. Instead they make the waste recyclable, upcyclable or return it back into nature in an organic form. To do that they can count on their partnership with Kansha Life.
The second pillar is “Fish for the future” which seeks to address threats and imbalances to marine ecosystems to make it better for nature, fishers and tourism. The Datai Langkawi hotel is also working with the Department of Fisheries and the state government to make the bay a protected area to protect its coral reefs. This program is possible with the help of Marecet, an organization dedicated to the conservation of marine mammal through community awareness and education, conservation action, and policy advocacy on a government level.
“Wildlife for the future”, the third pillar of the Datai Pledge aims to protect and restore the wildlife of the island which is threatened by human actions like deforestation but also by natural factors, difficult to maintain in an island such as storms, fire and normal population fluctuations. To help protect the wildlife, the Datai Pledge works on reforestation with the Forestry Department of Malaysia, habitat restoration, camera traps and adoption programmes with the expertise of hornbill conservationist specialists.
The last pillar is about “Youth for the future”, in order to include young people in the protection of nature. This programme aims to educate them in environmental issues and give them the tools and knowledge to understand sustainable actions. This project is in partnership with Green Growth Asia Foundation’s (GGAF) which takes initiatives that drive economic prosperity through social inclusivity and environmental responsibility, and through advancing education programmes.
EXO Foundation support
In June 2025, EXO Foundation made a donation to the Datai Pledge to support their work in making tourism more responsible. The donation will be redistributed equitably between all partners of the Datai Pledge, benefiting to organizations, local communities and farmers.
We encourage our clients to support this initiative as well when booking at the resort.
